Cassowary Hideaway (Ant Plant Nature Refuge)
Cassowary Hideaway is located in East Feluga, 8km west of the South Mission Beach township adjoining Mount Mackay National Park in Far North Queensland. We are working behind the scenes to secure permanent protection for the 216 hectare property as it contains state significant essential habitat for endangered cassowaries and core habitat for mahogany gliders.
The threatened Australian Ant Plant (Myrmecodia beccarii) is found on the property, an amazing plant which has formed a symbiotic relationship with the Golden Ant (Iridomyrmex cordatus). The ant lives in tunnels inside the plant and its droppings dissolve into the stem, feeding the plant. In return the ants get a cool, dark, well-protected place to live.
The Apollo jewel butterfly (Hypochrysops apollo apollo) lays its eggs only on the ant plant and the Mistletoe Bird (Dicaeum hirundinaceum) enjoys the ant plant fruits.
Conservation Values
Cassowary Hideaway is home to precious species including cassowaries and mahogany gliders, both listed in the top 20 species within Australia’s Threatened Species strategy. Other vulnerable species on the site include the Ant Plant, and the associated Apollo Jewel Butterfly. Cassowary Hideaway is the perfect place to permanently secure protection for these species being adjacent to a national park and containing a mosaic of 90% remnant vegetation with nearly 200ha of healthy endangered regional ecosystems.
