Meet Boo the koala and her joey at Aroona
Meet Boo a young, healthy koala discovered during our Aroona health assessments, and she’s carrying a joey! Her name was chosen because the Jagun Alliance were conducting cultural fire practices elsewhere on the property that same day. It comes from the Bundjalung word Boorabee (koala).
Dr Bill Ellis, Dr Sean FitzGibbon, and Ben Barth led the health assessment and Boo was found to be in great condition — a positive indicator for ongoing land management efforts. Her presence, along with that of her joey, highlights the success of restoration and weed control work that has improved the safe movement corridors across Aroona. Each healthy koala sighting contributes valuable data to monitoring programs that track population health and habitat use across the Little Liverpool Range.
Encounters like Boo’s reaffirm the importance of protecting and restoring koala habitat across Queensland. Every healthy koala represents a success story in the face of mounting environmental pressures, from habitat fragmentation to disease. Boo and her joey are living proof that with the right partnerships, dedication, and land management, native wildlife can continue to flourish in the landscapes we share.
Boo is a joyful reminder of why we work so hard to manage weeds and invasive species at Aroona — so wildlife like her can thrive in healthy, connected habitats.
